From Alpe-d’Huez, take the DMC cable car and get off at the 2700m terminus.
Return on the Poutran cable car back down to Alpe-d’Huez.
This is a very varied route, passing from a rocky, Alpine, technical first section, to a pastoral and then forest path in the second, in the heart of a vast valley, heavy with the scent of the short Alpine summer.
Leave the DMC after the second section and ride down the forest track to Lac Blanc. Leave the track 400m afterwards, to climb up to the right onto a rocky outcrop. You are now on the second section downhill track that is signposted, protected by tape and reserved for mountain-bikes. The route features highly technical sections, including steps, switchbacks, and a steep gradient on a sometimes slippery terrain. The path then joins up with the ski run. A difficult track is marked out in the scree and finally comes out onto a forest track above the middle DMC station.
From the DMC, descend by sight towards the departure point of an old two-seater chairlift ‘Les Plates’. Cross the road to get to the Col de Poutran just opposite. The path heads off immediately to the left on surprisingly grippy slabs. Follow the track, looking out for sheep gates. Passageways have been installed for you to get across easily.
After the Champ-Clotury junction, leave the track to take a path off to the left to the ‘Combe de Poutran’. The rest of the route is on pleasant terrain, with switchbacks. The only difficulty may arise from crossing the river.
The path then goes off along the mountainside and into the forest. This is a fast track, so look out for hikers. Once out of the forest, turn right back to the resort of Oz-en-Oisans.
