From Bourg-d’Oisans, take the RN91 towards Grenoble and turn off onto the D526 to Ornon and then the D221 to Oulles, the starting point. Another option involves leaving the car at La Paute (the junction of the RN91 and the D526) and cycling the 8km up to stretch your legs a bit… This road is as quiet as a rural track and the scenery is quite outstanding.
84 switchbacks and 680m of height loss. These two figures sum up this descent, which is one of the finest in the Oisans region. One bend leads to another in the heart of an ancient beech wood.
Park at the entrance to Oulles, next to a sign on the right indicating ‘La Malaine, plaine du Bourg’. Ride to the ridge known as the ‘Crête du Fort’ (1417 m) next to an electricity pylon, and you’re ready for the La Malaine descent!
The path is fast at the beginning, running alongside the mountain, although the narrowness means that great care needs to be taken. In the dark woods, it’s a good idea to wear glasses or a transparent mask.
The terrain is particularly varied, featuring switchbacks, a scramble section and a succession of sliding bends. Everything is there for better and for…better, as, so long as you have the skills, there is no reason for any danger.
The route finishes on a straight section, surrounded by high grass, that comes out onto a track. Turn right back to the hamlet of La Paute.
