Take the D219 from Bourg-d’Oisans to Villard-Notre-Dame, where you can park your car. The road is pretty daring – it’s worth the trip just for the drive. Keep your eyes on the road, drivers!
This is quite a short route, but full of interest as it winds its way through some of the most isolated villages of the Oisans region. Why not stop off at the local café to soak up the atmosphere…
From Villard-Notre-Dame, go up a fine, fast track towards Villard-Reymond to reach the Col du Solude. From the col, take the GR 50 path towards Le Pré Gentil – the view over the Bourg-d’Oisans plain and the Grandes Rousses massif is quite incredible. The path follows the ridge to the Col Saint-Jean. Turn back here to the Col du Solude (or take the alternative route – see below) and ride on to Villard-Reymond.
Join up with the Maisons du Loup route (carry over approx. 200m). A fine descent follows through the forest with a few uphill sections towards Villard-Notre-Dame – you cross over the path you took on the way up before arriving back at the car.
As an alternative, from the Col Saint-Jean, you can cross some pasture land and take the path to Bourg-d’Oisans via Le Puy. In the forest, follow the bends down from the ridge. This is quite a difficult route with highly technical switchbacks by the cliff of the Pré Gentil. The path widens out lower down. Take a left-hand turn and then, further on, turn to the right to finish the ride at Bourg-d’Oisans.
This alternative is only for the most experienced riders. Don’t take it unless your technique is tip-top!
