ORGANISATION

From Bourg-d’Oisans, take the RN91 towards Grenoble and turn off onto the D526 to Ornon. Then take the D210a to La Grenonière and leave your vehicle in the car park.

IN BRIEF

A journey into the arctic tundra of the Taillefer, with a magnificent view over the Grandes Rousses, the Ecrins and all the Oisans valleys. A corner of the world that will make you soon forget the 30 minutes of carrying.

DESCRIPTION

Starting from La Grenonière, take the road past the TV transmitter to the start of the track (gated). Follow for the track for a good 3km to the Pont de Basse-Montagne bridge. Ride through the clearing and up 100m to the left to join up with the GR path which then goes off to the right into pasture land. Despite the 30 minutes of carrying, the path is very pleasant. Ride to the ‘Chalet communal’ (shepherd’s hut) and at the junction, take the right-hand path that descends wonderfully through Alpine pasture. Continue along the ridge. The path then dips down to the left towards Oulles. At the bottom of the sometimes technical switchbacks, you join a track. Turn almost immediately right towards Puy-d’Oulles on a gentle slope. The track ends at the hamlet of Puy-d’Oulles, which is deserted except for one building.

Take the track that goes down to the left and after two or three bends, take a path off to the right below a ruined house. The route becomes fast and pleasant through woodland. Ignore a first path off to the left and take the steeper one to the right to La Pallud (look for the signs on the trees). 600m afterwards, ignore another path off to the left. This is a little-used route, where trees sometimes block the path.

The route then comes out onto the road to La Pallud. Return to your car on the quiet and pleasant tarmac road.
