Cross country

Cross the village of La Grave and turn right after the tunnel on the D33 to Le Chazelet. Park on the ski resort car park.
An excellent climb up onto the Emparis Plateau on a pleasant, scented path. Secret, steppe-like valleys, pastures dotted with peat bogs… this ride in the heart of the Emparis will not leave you indifferent.
Starting from Le Chazelet, follow signs to the ‘Pic du Mas de la Grave’. The fast path takes you to the ‘Baraque de la Buffe’ via a splendid cross made of volcanic tuff. Turn left towards the mountain and follow a path where you may have to carry or push at times. Once past the col, you arrive at the cairns of the col. The Pic du Mas de la Grave can be clearly seen on the right.
Follow the track back down. Cross the Rachas stream to take a path on the right-hand bank. Follow signs to Besse. The plateau begins to look like the steppes, with the path leading gradually downwards. After the Refuge de Rif Tort, take the track down to the Refuge Josserand, followed by the GR 54 to the Col du Souchet. Do not take the track on which all traffic is prohibited.
At the Col du Souchet at 2365m, the view over the Meije and the Râteau is quite incredible. Why not take time to explore Lac Lérié and Lac Noir, the two eyes of the Emparis Plateau watching the Meije?
The GR 54 curves round to the east in a wide basin. Cross over the Rif de Cartugeas. A fine descent follows, without any technical difficulties, among peaceful cattle. Once at the top of the cable car, you just need to whizz down the bends to the Gâ stream, at the bottom of Le Chazelet.
