Park at Allemont swimming-pool (piscine).
‘A whole load of ups and downs!’ It’s a steep climb up to Le Rivier-d’Allemont, but the lovely descent through the forest more than makes up for it. This route goes through the heart of the Eau d’Olle valley. Nestled between the untamed peaks of the Belledonne and the imposing Grandes Rousses massif, there is a profusion of nature here, including water, forests and rich Alpine pasture.
From Allemont, climb up the two switchbacks to the lake and then follow the right-hand dyke to the end. Take the road Pont-Ratier – Le Rivier-d’Allemont road and turn off at Articol-le-Bas to follow a track with a couple of steep sections. Join the narrow and very steep road up to Le Rivier d’Allemont.
From Le Rivier d’Allemont, go downhill, turning almost immediately right towards La Chapelle. After a kilometre on the tarmac, join the wide, fast GR 549. Carry on to a wooden bridge over the mountain stream. The descent begins soon after in the woods, down a path which leads to the ruined Chalet le Clot. At this junction, turn left, following the signs to Articol.
The best part of the route starts her, with a series of tight switchbacks. At the bottom, the main road takes you down to Allemont.
