Climbing

Once you have cycled past the ’Rampe des Commères’, access to the bottom of the road up to the village of Les Deux-Alpes does not present any major difficulties. The climb from the Chambon barrage is 9 km long, with an 8% incline on a wide and well-maintained road.
From Bourg-d’Oisans follow the RN91 towards Briançon. After 5 km turn left into the gorges of the Infernet. Go through the tunnel of the Rampe des Commères and go to the Chambon barrage.
Before the barrage, turn right and follow the D213 to Les Deux-Alpes. You can take the same road on your way back.
That little bit further
The most energetic of you may want to come back via itinerary no. 6 (La Croix de Cassini). Cycle along the lake and turn left to Mizoen - Col de Sarenne on the D25.
The Chambon Barrage
This barrage was built in 1935 to regulate the wild river Romanche; it was one of the first barrages ever built in France. Its construction meant that the church and houses of three small villages (Pariset, Le Dauphin and Le
Chambon), the remains of which are sometimes still visible in winter when the lake is at its lowest had to disappear for good.
This construction made of concrete is 294 m long, 70 m wide and 90 m high and it holds 54 million m3 of water!
