Oz-en-Oisans - Alpe d’Huez N°20

Climbing

Bourg-d’Oisans > Télécabine de Poutran

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

On this unique route you can also use the cable cars of Alpe-d’Huez. This will be an excellent opportunity for you to train your muscles before tackling, for instance, the 21 renowned hairpin bends of the famous road to Alpe-d’Huez. This calm and regular itinerary does not present any major difficulties. But remember that the cable car of Poutran only operates in summer and in winter. Tickets can be bought from the local ticket booths for ski lifts and cable cars.

ITINARY

From Bourg-d’Oisans follow the RN91 towards Grenoble, then turn right and follow the D526 to Allemont. After the bridge over the river Romanche turn right and follow the D44 towards Villard-Reculas. Then cycle through the hamlets of Raffour and La Beurrière.

Carry on climbing and follow the small road to Le Boulangeard (D44a). At the crossroads follow the signs to "Oz station".

At "Oz station" you can get on the cable car of Poutran which will take you to the skiing area of Alpe-d’Huez. When you get off the cable car on top, in order to get to the road to lake Besson you will need to carry your bicycle on the track down below (5 min). From Alpe-d’Huez you can take the famous 21 hairpin bends back to Bourg-d’Oisans.

CULTURAL INFORMATIONS

A local story
According to the locals of l’Oisans, even "chicken need to wear crampons"! In this mountain-climbing region "par excellence", Oz-en-Oisans used to be a popular point of departure for the ascent of the ’Grandes Rousses’ massif. Abbot Bayle, a seasoned mountaineer, made the first ascent of the Southern peak of the ’Grandes Rousses’ massif which is named after him today.
