A local story
Legend has it that the people of Oz-en-Oisans had their sheep shepherded by ’bouames’, small men living in the mountains, experts on metal-working, with whom the locals would exchange services. The Noyrets d’Oz family who had a chalet on the Col du Poutran, had their herds shepherded by two bouames. In autumn, to give them a treat, they would give them new clothes, so that they might not catch a cold in the chalet in the winter. However, when the two ’bouames’ saw themselves in those nice garments, they sang: "I’m lovely, you’re lovely, we’re both lovely; we’re not going to look after the lambs any more."
Then they left, leaving the sheep there during the whole winter, and were never to be seen again.
