Touring

This is an ideal tour for a little training of your legs. The frantic traffic on the RN91 in the summer and the charming little country roads form an amazing contrast on this lovely route which is easy enough to cycle for anyone.
From Bourg-d’Oisans, first cycle along the bottom of the road to Alpe-d’Huez (D211), then turn left and cycle along the small road to Bassey - Les Essoulieux, which will take you to the RN91. Then at the junction turn right towards Grenoble. After 10 km, just before Livet, you will come to the Resistance Memorial. Then follow the small road on the right which will lead you on to the D526 and then cycle back to Bourg-d’Oisans on the RN91.
Saint-Laurent or the story of the Lake of l’Oisans
At the beginning of the 12th century, life in the plains was dominated by the impetuous rhythm of the untamed river Romanche. Its overflows formed small lakes and Bourg-d’Oisans was known as Saint-Laurent-du-Lac.
In 1191, a landslide obstructed the course of the river Romanche in the Livet gorges. This natural dyke caused the already existing lake to rise so much that a harbour needed to be built.
In September 1219, in the middle of the night, its dyke suddenly collapsed and a cataclysm devastated everything along its way; even the town of Grenoble was carried away. According to local records, even the town of Arles in the South of France was once hit by a wave.
